How often do I need a Bit inspection?

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED A BIT INSPECTION?
Carriers must ensure each regulated vehicle is inspected at least every 90 days, or more often if necessary to ensure safe operation. Certain vehicles will need even more frequent checkups; passenger buses, for example, need to pass an inspection every 45 days. Vehicle inspections must be documented and retained for at least two years.

BIT and DOT

BIT = “Biennial Inspection of Terminals”

The Basic Inspection of Terminals *(BIT)* Program requires that all commercial vehicles domiciled and operating intrastate, or within California, with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 pounds or greater, receive a bumper-to-bumper safety inspection, or BIT Inspection, every 90days. This includes all motor trucks and trailers, as well as any vehicle, regardless of gross vehicle weight, if it hauls or carries hazardous materials.

DOT = “Department of Transportation” inspection

The *DOT *Inspection Program requires that all commercial vehicles domiciled and operating both within California (Intrastate) and outside California (Interstate), with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 pounds or greater, receive a bumper-to-bumper safety inspection, or DOT Inspection, at least once every 365 days. This includes all motor trucks and trailers, as well as any vehicle, regardless of gross vehicle weight, if it hauls or carries hazardous materials.
